Using a Light Switch Timer When You are Away From Home

As your Home Security Advisor I highly recommend using light switch timers while you are away from home. However, they must be used correctly to gain the security effect you are looking for.

The advantage of these simple security devices are really quite obvious to most, but seems to be so seldom used. It's unfortunate because most of the time, burglars are looking to break into your house when you're away from home – remember they don't want to be seen.

The best place to apply this device is on a lamp which you would normally have turned on when you are at home. The lamp should be visible from the street so anyone passing by would assume you are home and awake. Having that lamp always on a timer will help you from forgetting to turn it on before you leave.

I also recommend using one on a unique light that resembles the glow of colors from a T.V.; a pretty good indication that someone is home. These devices should use far less electricity than running a television and will be a good addition to your home security plan.

Another idea is to place a radio on a timer so it is on only during the hours you would normally be awake. The radio should be placed so it can be heard while standing outside your front door. It only has to be on loud enough so it gives the impression someone is listening to the radio. If you have it on a talk radio station it will sound like people are having a conversation That may be just enough to make a would-be-burglar think twice about breaking into your home.
